My partner was refused a UK Standard Visitor visa five years ago when she was single, a college student, and did not provide sufficient evidence of her circumstances in her home country. Since then, her circumstances have changed significantly: we are now in a civil partnership and living together, she is employed, we have traveled together to seven countries (including France, Belgium and Hong Kong), and I have independently visited the UK once and the Schengen Area four times.

While my income is sufficient to fund a solo trip to the UK, our combined disposable income will not support a joint visit. My wife's income is relatively low.

Would it be advisable for me to sponsor her UK visit and for her to apply alone? Her current ties to her home country include her partner (me), her job, her role as a caregiver for her elderly parents, and property ownership acquired after our marriage. Would these factors help overcome concerns arising from her previous refusal?

It would be a logical solution if your partner cannot demonstrate that her personal financial circumstances tick the ‘has sufficient funds” box.

UK Visitor visa rules explicitly permit financial sponsorship:

V 4.3. In assessing whether an applicant has sufficient funds under V 4.2.(e), the applicant’s travel, maintenance and accommodation may be provided by a third party only if that third party:

(a) has a genuine professional or personal relationship with the applicant; and

(b) is not, or will not be, in breach of immigration laws at the time of the decision or the applicant’s entry to the UK as a Visitor; and

(c) can and will provide support to the applicant for the intended duration of the applicant’s stay as a Visitor.

A five year-old refusal shouldn’t be a barrier to a successful application, given the change of circumstances you describe.
